Bachelor’s Buttons (centaurea cyanus), also known as Cornflowers. Bachelor Buttons are a variety of flowers that grow on strong stems for borders, display, and bouquets. They are cross-pollinated by insects, so grow only one variety at a time to preserve particular strains. Flowers bloom in shades of blue, pink, and white. Plants often self-sow. In warm regions, sow Bachelor’s Buttons seed in late summer or fall for winter or early-spring bloom. The Blue Boy Bachelor’s Button is a wonderful blue variety that is draught tolerant, and can be used dried or cut. It can re-seed in optimum locations. The Polka Dot Mix includes dwarf, double flowering Bachelor Buttons in shades of blue, pink, white, and lavender. Compact plants reach 24" and they flower throughout summer into fall.
