Tomato, Mortgage Lifter Heirloom The renowned ‘Mortgage Lifter’ has been beloved by tomato enthusiasts for more than 70 years. Plants produce large mild-flavored tomatoes with few seeds. Excellent for sandwiches.These magnificent plants were originally developed by West Virginian Marshall C. Byles, known as “Radiator Charlie,” when he began cross-breeding the largest tomatoes he could find. After experimenting with cross-pollination of flowers from each of five selected tomato plants, he found the seeds he was looking for. Finally, he rotated the seeds for the next four years and developed pinkish-red tomatoes that weighed from 1 to 2 pounds each, which he named ‘Mortgage Lifter’.
Starting tomatoes indoors a couple weeks before the last frost is best. Plant 1/2" deep, 3 seeds to a pot. When plants are 6" to 8" set outside in sun to harden them off. After last frost plant in the ground. 85 Days to maturity.
