Tomatillo, Husk Tomato

A key ingredient in many Latin American green sauces, Tomatillos are grown throughout the Western Hemisphere. Tomatillos are not exactly tomatoes, although they do belong to the tomato family. The tomatillo fruit is surrounded by a paper-like husk that splits open by harvest. The husk turns brown, and the fruit can be a variety of colors, including red, yellow, green, or purple. Gardeners should locate two or more plants close together for proper pollination.
